Dirk with Sandy
Is your dog's attempt at "greetings" on a walk less like a handshake and more like an air horn attached to a freight train? You are not alone!
Meet Sandy, the sweetest dog whose love for life translated into frantic pulling, jumping, and LOUD barking every time another dog appeared. Walks were high-stress, and her go-to emotion outside was always set to 11.
Sandy and her dad joined our 8-week Less Bark, Happy Walks group class. Our strategy is simple: we stop trying to suppress the reaction and instead work on changing the dog's internal go-to emotion from "freakout" to "focused and safe," using intentional, incremental exposure. (Did this make your brain go, "what?" π€ Yea, we know it's counterintuitive!) And yea, we do also ask the dog for an alternative behavior.
This week, they hit a milestone that made our entire group cheer: Sandy walked with her dad parallel to another dog, maintaining focus and walking calmly for an extended periodβwith minimal barking and lunging! In prior classes, she was not even able to go out to the yard without screaming.
BIG, HUGE YEAH! ππ This isn't about perfectly behaved robots; it's about helping dogs like Sandy learn how to process their environment without hitting emotional overload. It shows the incredible power of building a focused foundation.
If your walks feel like a battleground, and you're tired of apologizing for your dog's excessive barking (and lunging), it's time to learn the system that actually works.
Join our next Less Bark, Happy Walks Self-Pace program to see what this is all about and reclaim your walks!

I focus on helping pet parents with puppies, teen dogs and rescues start their journey on the right paw. I want to help them avoid the typical mistakes, but sometimes we are called in to help with behavior modification for pulling like a train on walks, barking at anyone at the door, jumping on people, barking and lunging at other dogs and people, and many more issues.
I grew up with dogs and live with several now, Danny and Jill. But Jack is the one who opened my world to fostering and other pursuits to help other dogs in need.
When you tell me that you feel overwhelmed and exhausted about what you are dealing with, I know what you mean. Jack was a over-reactive dog that I could not keep under threshold when other people came up to us when we were on a leash.
I realized Jack was not the only dog with these issues, which brought me to what I love doing now----To help the other Jacks in the world so you can have a less stressful life with your dog.
